This week I had the joy of tackling my biggest print run yet: 400 business cards for my sister’s micro-bakery, Bridge Street Breads. I oiled up the ole Chandler & Price letterpress and put it through its paces, using the modern polymer plate method to match the logo and branding I designed for her last year. The polymer plate also let me print four cards up at once, which cut down on press time and saved her some dough (pun fully intended).
Now, I’ll admit, the prints aren’t flawless. Running an antique press is all about tinkering, tweaking, and sometimes muttering under your breath. I’m still learning how to coax out consistent impressions, and this run taught me a lot about patience and process. But honestly, I kind of love the imperfections. They give the cards a bit of handmade charm, like the small variations in a loaf of artisan bread (That's what I'm telling myself, at least). My sister didn’t mind either. She was thrilled to have a stack of cards that carried her brand in a tactile, authentic way.
And speaking of my sister, she’s the real talent here. Her bread has people talking far beyond Vermont. Every loaf is the product of years of dedication, care, and skill. The crust is golden, the crumb is perfection, and the flavor? Let’s just say it’s the kind of bread that makes you rethink every slice you’ve had before.
You can find Bridge Street Breads in stores and at farmers markets throughout northern Vermont. And if you’re wondering where to snag a loaf (before they sell out, which they often do), head over to Instagram and follow @BridgeStBreads. Trust me, once you try it, you’ll understand why I say she’s the one really rising to the occasion.
P.S. It’s been about a year and a half since I first began setting up my letterpress studio, and it finally feels fully functional. I didn’t expect the nostalgic smell of ink to linger the next morning, but it was a welcome, delightful surprise, which I think makes it officially a printshop.
